School book readings

Having an author and storyteller visit your school is a great way to excite children about reading and writing, as well as complementing the topics you are covering in the National Curriculum.

Feedback from recent school visits:

“Thank you so much for coming and talking to us about your wondrous and varied life. The children were riveted by every aspect and, from the subsequent discussions, it is clear they have been variously inspired. 

Many talk excitedly of becoming farmers and cooks and others were drawn to the idea of being children’s authors and illustrators. All now wish fervently to be dog owners! 

Year 3 and 4 teachers, especially, note that children who were reluctant to write longer narrative pieces have, since your visit, begun to challenge themselves to do this for the fun of it!

Granny Marmalade and Uncle Tractor has proved stimulating for primary schools that are exploring where food comes from and discussing local food production in the current economic and environmental climate. The book embraces a number of topics across KS1, such as Science, Geography, Citizenship as well as Design and Technology (food recipes).

The story captures the magic of the changing year on a working farm and the reciprocal relationship between the land and cooking. It is an enchanting but realistic portrait, inspired by the author’s own experience of living on a farm, while also running a business making jams, curds, chutneys and jellies.

Julian brings along props including toy animals, jars of marmalade, oranges, lemons, kitchen utensils and jars of spices. We can hold reading sessions for 30 minutes, or arrange half days to include cooking too – children can make their own marmalade, design labels and take home their own jars.

We plan our visits to meet the needs of Reception children, right through to Years 5 and 6.

The Railways Land Dogs’ Club – Ivy’s lost ball is not only a charmingly illustrated story but it also complements Science and Geography topics in KS1. Julian talks about all the different sorts of dogs she and Ivy meet together on their daily walks. She talks about caring for animals, respecting our environment and engages the children in funny stories about their own or friends’ pets. The session often ends with a fun game.

The Railway Land Dogs’ Club -Three Further Tails is the latest in the Railway Land Dogs Club series. There are tales of secrets, redemption, fun and friendship. The stories are woven with local historical facts and events, including what really happens to all the dogs on Bonfire night!

Magnus Carter was inspired by the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta. It tells the story of a brave little mole who challenges the bad King in the face of injustice. Julian’s story stimulates discussions about fairness, rules and democracy, as well as introducing this important historical event to younger KS1 children.
